American Douglas Tbd 1 Devastator

The model of this American torpedo-bomber was made in 1:48 scale from the Lion Roar set. Additional photo-etched plates were used to enrich model apart from those included in the set.

The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was an aircraft designed to operate from aircraft carriers. It was the first airplane with hydraulically folding wings. In 1937, when it was put into production, it was considered the most modern torpedo bomber not only in the American Navy, but also in the world. 129 copies were produced.

However, after a few years, during the Second World War, it turned out to be not as effective as its counterpart in the Japanese Navy, the Nakajima B5N.

The Battle of Midway, which took place in the Pacific between June 4 and June 7, 1942, marked the end of the Devastators' active service. 3 squadrons of these aircraft were sent from the carriers (41 machines in total) for one of the missions. They lost the escort of fighters during cloudy weather. According to the order, they were to attack as soon as they found enemy ships. The attack without cover ended tragically for them. Only 4 planes returned to the aircraft carriers. It must also be added that none of the torpedoes they dropped did any damage to the Japanese.

The photos represent the model aircraft that took off for this mission from the carrier Hornet. No Devastator returned to Hornet.

After this battle, the Devastators were moved to training tasks, and they were completely withdrawn from service in 1943.

The crew of the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator aircraft consisted of three people. Between the pilot and the shooter, there was a place for the bombardier in the cockpit. During the fight, the bombardier lay on the bottom of the fuselage, right behind the engine, looking through a special window. It can be seen inside the open hatch in the 9th photo.

The Devastator had a folding undercarriage. The landing gear was designed so that the wheels protruded approximately 25 cm when folded, in case the plane is unable to extend it before landing.

The plane was powered by a 14-cylinder two-row air-cooled radial engine. The engine displacement was 30 liters (1830 in³). It weighed 567 kg (1235 lb).

The Devastator could carry one torpedo or 453 kg (1000 lb) of bombs

Specifications:

  • Wingspan: 15.24 m (50 ft),
  • Length: 10.69 m (35 ft),
  • Height 4.59 m (14 ft 1 in),
  • Maximum weight: 4,623 kg (10,194 lb),
  • Maximum speed: 331 km/h (206 mph),
  • Service ceiling: 6,004 m (20,000 ft).

In the gallery there are also photos of a plastic model of this aircraft, but in the TBD-1A version with floats.
