Komintern artillery tractor towing the B-4 howitzer

The photos represent plastic models of the Soviet Komintern artillery tractor and the B-4 howitzer, 203 mm (8 in) caliber, 1931 model. Both models were made in 1:35 scale from the Trumpeter boxes.

The Komintern tracked tractor, the plastic model of which is shown in the photos, was being produced in the Soviet Union in 1934-1940. At that time, 1,798 copies were produced. About 568 of them lasted the Second World War. In the Red Army, they were used to tow most types of heavier guns. The maximum weight of the towed gun was 12-14 tons (UK-11⅘-13⅘ tons, USA-13⅕-15⅖ tons).

The tractor could carry a cannon crew or a load weighing up to 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). There were two fuel tanks with a capacity of 275 liters (UK-60½ gal, USA-72⅗ gal) each under the load box. There also was a winch with a 30-meter (98⅖ ft) rope and a tractive force of 10 tons (UK-9⅘ tons, USA-11 tons). There was place for the driver and passenger in the cabin. The driver was sat on the right side.

The Komintern tractor was equipped with a 15-liter (915⅖ in³) 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 98 kW (131 hp).

The suspension of the T-24 tank was used in the construction of the tractor chassis.

Some technical data of the Komintern tractor:

  • Length: 5.76 m (18.9 ft),
  • Width: 2.2 m (7⅕ ft),
  • Height: 2.54 m (8.3 ft),
  • Empty weight: 10.64 t (UK-10½ tons, USA-11.7 tons),
  • Max speed: 30.5 km/h (19 mph).

There is also a paper model of the B-4 howitzer in the Gallery. You can read some information of the B-4 there.
