Plastic models of the Sd.Kfz.11 vehicle and the PaK 40 cannon
Models were made in 1:35 scale. The model of the Sd.Kfz.11 artillery tractor was built using the AFV Club set. The artillery tractor was slightly reworked by adding an artillery compartment. The shells in this compartment and the door to it were made of resin. The model of the PaK 40 anti-tank gun was made from the Dragon kit. Both models were improved with the Aber photo-etched parts.
The artillery tractor shown in the photos was the basic version of the vehicle widely used by the Germans during the Second World War. Apart from this version, the artillery tractor was produced in five others, marked from Sd.Kfz.11/1 to Sd.Kfz.11/5. A characteristic feature of tractors used in artillery was the ammunition compartment, which is clearly visible in the photographs.
The vehicle, the plastic model of which is presented here, is towing a Pak 40 anti-tank gun weighing 1,425 kg (3,142 lb). It could also tow the leFH 18 howitzers and FlaK anti-aircraft guns.
The Sd.Kfz.11 artillery tractor was produced in the years 1938-1945. About 9,000 of these tractors in different versions were built during this time.
The PaK 40 was a German 7.5 cm (2.95 in) anti-tank gun. The first copies appeared in use at the end of 1941. The gun proved so effective that it also mounted in vehicles called tank destroyers.
The PaK 40 could fire 14 times per minute, and the effective firing distance was 1,800 m (5,906 ft). The anti-tank shells used for this gun weighed 4.05, 4.57 and 6.80 kg (8.93, 10.08 and 15 lb).
