HMS Alert

A paper model of the British HMS Alert sloop from 1777. The work was awarded at the 8th Competition of Paper and Plastic Models in Świdnik, Poland in 2014.

Several ships called Alert sailed in the 18th century. Sailing ships of this type were used for patrol cruises, transporting mail and supplies, and to fight smugglers.

The sloop represented in the photos began her short service in mid-1777. In the same year, HMS Alert captured the American USS Lexington brig (it was the period of the American Revolutionary War).

A year later, on July 27, 1778, she together with the famous HMS Victory ship of the line took part in the skirmish pending between the English and French fleet. The fight was called the First Battle of Ushant. Later that same year, the ship was intercepted by the French Junon frigate in the English Channel. According to French documents, later she sailed under the name Alerte and was equipped with fourteen guns. The sloop crashed off the coast of America in December 1779.

The sloop was armed with 12 cannons and 12 falconets. Her length without bowsprit was approximately 21 meters (69 ft 4 in) and a width of approximately 8 meters (25 ft 7 in).
