HMS Juno

A wooden model of the HMS Juno sailing ship was presented at the 11th International Festival of Plastic Reduction Models Bytom 2014.

HMS Juno was a British frigate. She was launched in 1780. The sailing ship took part in the fighting during the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. She was being sailed to the East Indies, in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In 1807 Juno returned to Great Britain, and she was dismantled in 1811.

The length of the sailing ship was 38.6 m (126⅗ ft), width 10.7 m (35.1 ft) and draft: 2.44 m (8 ft). The crew consisted of 220 people.

The frigate was armed with 32 guns. Wikipedia says that the Juno was additionally equipped with 6 caronads, which are not included on the model. The cannons were placed as in the description below:

  • Covered gun deck: twenty six 12-pounder guns,
  • Quarterdeck, i.e. the deck between the mainmast and the stern of the ship: four 6-pounder guns and four 18-pounder carronades,
  • Fore deck: two 6-pounder guns and two 18-pounder carronades.

Carronades were short-barrel cannons with high firepower, but with a smaller range than regular cannons (300-400 meters). The barrel was shorter and its walls thinner, so the weight of the carronade was less than the weight of a regular cannon. Carronades were used as an auxiliary weapon and could be used by smaller ships..
