Varyag

A cardboard model of the Russian protected cruiser from the beginning of the 20th century was made in 1: 200 scale. The work was awarded at the 8th Competition of Paper and Plastic Models in Świdnik, Poland in 2014.

A characteristic element of the protected cruisers was the internal armor located near the waterline, designed to protect the propulsion elements of the ship and ammunition stores. In the vicinity of the center of the ship, the armor was flat (parallel to the deck), and in the vicinity of the ship's sides it sloped downwards. On such cruisers, external side and deck armor was not used.

The ship was built to order at the US shipyard in Philadelphia. She entered service in 1901. From 1902, the cruiser was stationed in the Far East.

After the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War (1904), the cruiser was blocked in the port of Czemulpo (now Incheon). Varyag accompanied by the Korietz gunboat took up the fight against the overwhelming Japanese forces. The cruiser was badly damaged during the hour of combat. With no chance of breaking through the blockade, she was sunk by her own crew.

Varyag sunk in the shallow water. The Japanese made an attempt to lift the ship, which was successful. After renovation, she was incorporated into the Japanese fleet and served as a training ship under the name Soya. She was also being on cruises abroad.

The cruiser was sold to Russia in 1916. A year later, due to poor technical condition, Varyag was sent to Great Britain for renovation. At the end of 1917, when the revolution broke out in Russia, she was confiscated by the British government. It was decided to sell the ship for scrap in 1920. On the way, she ran aground near the Shetland Islands. Finally, Varyag was dismantled there five years later.
