"Iraqi Freedom" is the code name given by the US to a military operation to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein. This conflict is also known as the Second Persian Gulf War. Apart from of the American and British soldiers who constituted the main force, 2,000 Australians and 180 Poles took part in the land operation.
The main official reasons for the attack were suspicions that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction and supports international terrorism. However, neither weapons of mass destruction nor terrorist bases were found after the war.
The war began on March 20, 2003. Baghdad was already controlled by coalition forces on April 9. The invasion officially was ended on May 1, 2003. After this date, international forces began the occupation, during which there were still armed clashes for a long time. Iraq was divided into four zones of occupation. US troops only left Iraq on December 18, 2011.
