Plastic model of the German Kanone 18 heavy gun

The diorama was built on the basis of the photo, which was found on the Internet. The photo was taken just after the Second World War and shows a German 17cm Kanone 18 cannon standing at a crossroads in Berlin and a civilian watching it.

A plastic 1:35 scale model of the cannon from the Trumpeter set was used to build the diorama, as well as the Voyager Model metal parts, which were slightly modified.

Diorama was awarded at the Scale Model Challenge 2017 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

The German 17 cm Kanone 18 cannon was produced in 1941-1945. During this time, 338 copies were built. 10 soldiers were required to operate it.

The cannon shell weighed 62.8 kg (138½ lb). 4 different charges used to fire it. The largest of them gave the initial velocity of the missile 925 m/s (3035 ft/s) and provided the greatest range of 29.6 km(18⅖ mi).

Specifications:

  • Caliber: 172.5 mm (6 13/16 in),
  • Mass: 23375 kg (51533 lb),
  • Barrel length: 8.103 m (26 ft 7 in).
