Diorama with a model of the Scammell Pioneer truck

The diorama was made in 1:35 scale based on a photo found on the Internet. It represents a scene taking place on a narrow road somewhere in Italy in 1943. Plastic figures of soldiers from the "Riich.Models" and plastic models of the Scammell Pioneer artillery tractor and 7.2-inch howitzer take part in the scene. Both models are made of separate the Thunder Models sets.

The Pioneer was a British truck produced by Scammell in the years 1927-1945. It was destined for use in the British colonies where there were no roads. About 3,400 of these vehicles were produced.

During the Second World War, the British Army used the Pioneer truck to transport damaged tanks, as a support vehicle and as an artillery tractor (R100). The military version of the Pioneer used an over 8-liter (488 in³) diesel engine, driving the rear wheels and the winch. The truck had good traction, and the slow-revving engine gave great pulling power at low speeds.

The trucks towing howitzers, such as shown on the diorama, also carried howitzer crews, which consisted of 10 people. They also transported ammunition and equipment needed to operate the cannons.
