Decurion

A mounted soldier figure entitled "Decurion" was made in 1:24 scale. The work received a distinction at the 12th International Festival of Plastic Reduction Models Bytom 2014.

In the times of Ancient Rome, the legion was both the basic and largest tactical unit of the army. The theoretical size of the legion equaled about 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. In practice, however, it rarely exceeded 4,000 people. The legion was consisted mainly of heavy infantry, that is armed and armored soldiers. During the Roman republic, i.e. until 27 BCE the legion also included 300 mounted soldiers.

The decurion was the commander of the decuria, a 10-person cavalry unit. Three such units, commanded by decurions, formed a larger unit called turmae. It follows that there were 10 turmae cavalry in each legion except the infantry.

After 27 B.C.E. already in the times of the Roman Empire, the decurion was called the leader of the bodyguard of his commander.
