Heavily Armored Samurai

A figurine "Heavily Armored Samurai" is a charakter of a warrior from Japan, 18th century. The work was presented at the 12th International Festival of Plastic Reduction Models Bytom 2014.

The samurai was an expert not only in the use of a sword. He was good at firing the bow, which was his primary weapon. He was able to use efficiently a yari (a spear tipped with a short straight blade) and a naginata (a polearm with a sword-shaped blade at the end for stabbing and cutting). The warrior, whose figure is shown in the photo, holds a naginata in his hands. From the 17th century, even women in samurai families had their own spears of this type and were able to use them to help defend their homes.

Armor was a characteristic piece of equipment of every samurai. It was often a masterpiece of the art of craftsmanship. The weapon was revered and passed down from father to son. Due to the fact that the armor consisted of numerous separate elements, it could fit even when the offspring had a different body structure. The quantity and quality of the armor elements depended on the rank and wealth of the warrior. The individual elements of the armor were connected by painted leather straps or silk strings.
