Figurine of the German Panzergrenadier
The photos represent a resin figurine of Panzergrenadier from the SS "Das Reich" division from the period of the Battle of Kharkov in 1943. The figurine is made in an unusual scale, its height is 70 mm (2¾ in). The figurine won the first prize in its category at the International Lusatian Competition of Plastic and Cardboard Reduction Models in 2015.
In the German army, including the modern one, Panzergrenadier are infantry units trained to cooperate with tanks. The first Panzergrenadier units began to appear in 1943. They arose from the transformation of motorized infantry units. Compared to regular infantry, they were better armed, especially with larger caliber weapons. They were mainly moved by trucks or armored personnel carriers.
The Battle of Kharkov, now a city in eastern Ukraine, was fought between February 21 and March 18, 1943. The city had been liberated by the Russians three weeks before the beginning of this battle. This time, despite the great advantage of the opponent, the Germans again captured Kharkov. This result was mainly due to the introduction of a "fresh" army against exhausted troops of the Red Army.
